CRIMEA 1855 FIRST MODERN WAR

The Crimean War was one of the most significant and deadly conflicts of the nineteenth century. As the first major European confrontation since the end of the Napoleonic Wars, it marked a turning point in military history and ushered Europe into the industrial age of warfare. In Crimea, photography was used for the first time in a military context, and war correspondents were able to report directly from the battlefield. The many photographs brought back from Crimea profoundly transformed both the image of war and public opinion’s relationship to it. By following four British and French photographers, this film explores how the war reshaped perceptions of conflict and laid the foundations of modern warfare.
