The petrochemical complex of Augusta-Priolo which extends over more than 20 kilometers in south-eastern Sicily is the largest of its kind in Europe. It is a major geostrategic crossroads for oil traffic, connecting the European continent to the Middle East on the road to Suez. Today, the territory is left to linger in the toxic fumes that permeate the sky, the sea, the land and the people. Scientific studies show that the rate of cancers and congenital malformations is among the highest in Europe.
