Carlos Gardel, one of the first superstars of the interwar period, remains the greatest popular myth of Buenos Aires and Argentina's universal symbol. In thirty years, he went from a suburban “gavroche” to an international ambassador for tango and Argentina. Having become a legend during his lifetime, he and his entourage built a mythic biography of him full of omissions, dark episodes and falsifications, in the image of Argentine history.
